Psoriasis Awareness Month

Did you know that August is Psoriasis Awareness Month?

125 million people worldwide have psoriasis according to the World Psoriasis Day Consortium.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease that causes inflammation in the body. There may be visible signs of inflammation such as raised plaques and scales on the skin.

What happens?

This occurs because the overactive immune system speeds up skin cell-growth. Normal skin cells completely grow and shed (fall off) in a month. With psoriasis, skin cells do this in only three or four days. Instead of shedding, the skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin.

Where does it happen?

Some people report that psoriasis plaques itch, burn, and sting. Plaques may appear on any part of the body, although they are commonly found on the elbows, knees and scalp.

Who can get it?

Symptoms often start between ages 15 and 25 but can start at any age. Men, women, and children of all skin colours can get psoriasis. While scientists do not know what exactly causes psoriasis, we do know that the immune system and genetics play major roles in its development.

What treatments are there for Psoriasis?

Psoriasis treatments aim to stop skin cells from growing so quickly and to remove scales. Options include creams and ointments (For example DMK Betagen), light therapy (photography), and oral or injected medication.

Other DMK Home Prescriptives that can help with Psoriasis include Beta Gel, Acu Creme, Herb & Mineral Mist & EFA+ Supplements.
